Overview: What is Cambridge Assessment International Education?

Cambridge Assessment International Education includes internationally recognized academic programs for students age 5 to 19.The high school A and AS Level courses offer students the opportunity to earn college credits that are accepted by universities across the globe. Schools can tailor their curriculum based on the needs of their students. Some of them base their whole curriculum on Cambridge classes while others combine them with other types. For instance, my high school combines AS and A level classes with Advance Placement (AP) ones.

The program is organized and administered by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, an organization that is part of the University of Cambridge and receives the support of its first-class teaching and research departments.

Courses

Cambridge Assessment International Education offers over 50 AS and A level classes classified in six subject groups and three curriculum groups. The subject groups are creative and professional, English language and literature, humanities and social sciences, mathematics, sciences and languages.  

Curriculum groups:

  • Group 1: mathematics and science
  • Group 2: languages
  • Group 3: arts and humanities

Each class has a test at the end of the school year and receives a separate grade. Students who pass the minimum required performance receive a grade for each exam that go from a high A* (A for AS exams) to E. Those who failed to reach the standard required for a pass receive a U or Ungraded.

In order to receive a Cambridge diploma, a student must earn a minimum of seven credits. One of the credits has to be from the course Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research and at least one credit has to come from each of curriculum groups 1, 2 and 3 mentioned above.

The following combinations of credits are valid to obtain the Diploma:
